Carl Zeiss Jena lenses manufactured in Jena
In 1846 Carl Zeiss, the university mecanical engineer, founded his "Werkstatt für Feinmechanik und Optik" to produce microscope equipment. Ernst Abbe joined in 1866, to become his later business partner. The theoretical work of Abbe improved the microscopes significantly.
The "Jenaer Glaswerk Schott und Genossen" was founded by Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe, Carl Zeiss and his son, Roderich Zeiss. This facilitated a lot of new recipes of glass with - until then - unheard of optical characteristics. In 1886 already 46 different kinds of glass were offered for sale.
Carl Zeiss Jena lens numbers
The intention is to make 2 different kinds of queries, a query-by-name (like Sonnar), and a generalised query by-number - although that may be limited due to the huge amount of lenses made. The Carl Zeiss Jena lenses, both prewar as in DDR times did not have a separate Bestellnummer as their BRD counterparts.
